Draw In Mendoza

Having not seen the game, I'm not sure what to think about the game between Newell's and Godoy Cruz. Certainly I can not deny the score, a 0-0 tie, but was it a point earned, or two points squandered?

According to La Capital Newell's had trouble getting their offense to flow, while Godoy, playing a simpler game, were more effective. When I look at the raw statistics on ESPNdeportes.com I see Newell's out shooting their opponents 9-5, but the shots that were actually on target were in Godoy's favor 3-2. They also had only 4 fouls compared to 11 for Newell's. That would all lead me to agree with La Capital's opinion, but it's often been argued that if teams are tied at the end of games, and a winner must be determined that the numbers of corners earned would be the best way to do so. If we go by that, Newell's had the better of the game 5-2.

San Lorenzo and Tigre both won their games, 1-0 against San MartĂn and 3-0 over Lanus respectively, Boca Jrs won their Clasico 1-0 at River. This puts San Lorenzo at the top of the tables with 25 points after 10 games. Tigre follows with 20, then Newell's with 18, and Boca with 17. River Plate and Rosario Central are joint bottom on 8 points, as Central lost 1-0 to Gimnasia LP.

Looking at the remain 9 games of the Apertura, Newell's and Tigre have 5 remaining road games, while San Lorenzo has 5 at home. With a 5 point lead over Tigre, 7 on Newell's, and a schedule that appears to be in their favor San Lorenzo looks all but certain to become Champions.

With no goals in Mendoza, I'll settle for the goal from the Central vs Gimnasia game... and own goal by Walter Ribonetto. That at least puts a bit of a smile on my face.
