Before kickoff of Newell's Old Boys 1-1 draw against Independiente on Saturday violence rose it's ugly head again as someone, for some reason, stabbed Diego "Panadero" Ochoa. The details are sketchy, some reports list Ochoa as the current leader of Newell's Hincha (fans,) while others refer to him as the Barras Brava leader (South American organized futbol hooligans, known for their violent nature.)
Fans clubs exist for teams in every sport through out the world, even here in the United States, where I live, but there is a difference between a fan club and gangs disguising themselves as such. Yet that is how things are in many South American countries, and indeed through out the world. The Barras Bravas of South America, Ultras in Europe, the position of "Fan Club President" often carries more power, or at least the illusion of such, than we in the USA would think of, all due to the threat of violence that they can bring.
But, as the saying goes, live by the sword, die by the sword. When you are the leader of a gang who is known for violence, and some one wants you to step down, they don't ask you politely, but with a knife through the ribs. I wish these things didn't happen, but they do.
There's also the possibility that this was an attack by a rival gang, hoping to weaken the group Ochoa leads, the name of which none of the articles I've seen mention. Anything is possible, and I doubt we'll ever really learn the truth of the matter.
